The Magic of Learning

Each picture on our home page has a meaning and was chosen for a reason.

Today, in the Temple of the Golden Buddha Wat Traimit in Bangkok, the 5½ ton solid gold Buddha inhabits a very ordinary temple and a very small space. It was made in the Sukkothai Period sometime around 1400 or 1500, but the Thai people of that time became worried about their warring Burmese neighbours and the potential loss of their valuable statue. So they covered it in clay so that no-one would know its worth or value under it’s grey disguise.

It stayed, covered in clay in the same location, from 1400 until the 1950s when some “careless” builders chipped the clay coating by accident whilst attempting to move it - and revealed 5½ tons of solid gold that lay hidden beneath the tons of clay intended to hide it.

Ever since we first heard this story we have been captivated by it. The idea of all that gold that no-one knew was there – all that beauty, all that value – all hidden under layers of clay.

At Merlin, we work passionately and skillfully with teams, groups and individuals with the aim of chipping away some of the clay to discover their inner value.

The word ‘Buddha’ means ‘one who is awake’, in the sense of having ‘woken up to reality’ – we find that a helpful state for business relationships!
